这是继 Redhat 和 Mandrake 之后我用的第三种 Linux Distribution。 OSS 软件老爱用些怪名字， 什么 Mozilla、 Firefox、 Amarok、 Nautilus、 Thunderbird、 K3b、 Xine，...， 不知道的人根本猜不出那是些啥东东。 这 Ubuntu (Kubuntu 是以 KDE 为 window manager 的 Ubuntu， 两者的前身都是 Debian) 更是连怎么发音都让人困惑。 不过名字归名字， Ubuntu 的安装使用都很方便， 怪不得近来窜升为了普通用户的第一大 Linux。 Ubuntu 的安装盘具有 LiveCD 功能， 可以让用户在安装前就知道自己的硬件是否直接被支持 (不直接被支持不等于不能安装， 只不过要多费些周折)， 这是一个很大的优点。 先说到这里， 其它感想以后再聊。:)

前一个月，我在办公室一台空闲的机器上安装了FreeBSD6.1，并安装了Gnome，感觉非常好用。

主要用这个BSD机器来写 AVR MCU 程序，安装了编译器 avr-gcc，下载器 avrdude，C库 avr-libc，全部配置好之后，就可以全部用开源软件来进行产品开发了。

另外，大多数的 Linux 软件都可以在 FreeBSD 下运行，比如画电路板的 Eagle，当然，也可以用GEDA。

在下用Ubuntu刚俩月，感觉很好！

It seems to me that Changhai's new forum is still based on the following components like the old version of the BBS ---

(1) Apache web server on a Kubuntu Linux server;

(2) MySQL as the DBMS backend;

(3) PHP as the CGI web interface frontend.

Although MySQL & PHP is the most popular combination for many websites, I believe the MySQL & Perl combination is superior. PHP may be easier to learn than Perl, hence its popularity among less experienced web developers. As a professional web developer, Changhai may want to consider switching to Perl.

Perl's advantages over PHP are very compelling:

- superior text-processing facilitating;

- richer set of data structures;

- mature object processing model;

- Apache modules such as mod_perl can improve the performance of Perl CGI scripts run from a web server;

- Perl's longevity and popularity leading to way more open-source packages than PHP, e.g., Perl has much better support for XML processing (this will leave some room for future upgrade towards supporting Math XML).

Perl has been my favorite language for a long time. Many people are now pushing Python due to its better object-oriented features, I still believe Perl is the ideal language for web developers.

Perl vs. PHP is a good topic to warm up this forum. :)

Perl is indeed a much more powerful language compare with PHP, although PHP is also not something that only represents "the old version of the BBS" - many of the most popular modern open source forum programs are written in PHP. I may consider Perl (or Python) for the next version (if we ever have next version :-).

BTW, as continuation of the original topic. I didn't use Ubuntu too often recently, but I did encounter one issue: when I upgrad kernel, the system failed to warn me about a conflict between the driver of my wireless network and the new kernel, which caused my losing connection after the upgrade.
