In response to certain critics, I am quoting an email I wrote to a friend:
Dear XXXXXX, I am always impressed by your poetic verses. Yes, we were almost overwhelmed by the power of nature and a sense of transiency. It felt like a large portion of the island was covered by black lava, many from eruptions in the past 50 years. The evidences of the destruction appears along with those of the rich volcanic soil: tropical fruit trees and rain forests, Kona coffee farms, and the old sugar plantations. There are newly developed resorts that sit like oases in the barren lava fields. At some places, there are even construction equipments pounding the black lava to make way to newer building sites. Yet, just a few years back, one such development was engulfed by fresh eruption. There is no guarantee of permanence in the southern part of the island, from the two live volcano. The northern part is less volatile, and marked by the footsteps of historic Hawaiians. Some of the artifacts of warfare they used in the late 18th century looked quite similar to older Chinese weapons. Maybe some Chinese immigrants came already? Most of the farming equipments used in 19th century California looked like those from China,
